Mumbai ranks 2nd in juvenile crime

NCRB data shows 946 cases registered against juveniles, second highest after Delhi

After the national capital, the nation's financial capital ranks second in the most number of juvenile offenders in 2016 as per data from National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB).

Delhi ranks first in the metropolitan cities category with a total of 2,368 cases against juveniles while Mumbai has 946 cases registered against them.

Pune stands third with a total of 749 cases registered against juveniles. The data shows that there is a steady rise in the crime committed by the juveniles in the city.

As a state, Maharashtra ranks second in the country after Madhya Pradesh. While Madhya Pradesh has a total incidences of 7,369, Maharashtra has 6,606 cases of juvenile crime.

In 2016, as many as 157 juveniles were booked for heinous crimes such as murder, attempted murder and grievous injuries.

Ninety five juveniles were booked for rape and gang rape, while 16 were booked for unnatural rape.

Over and above that, as many as 97 juveniles were booked for other crimes on women such as molestation, stalking, insulting modesty and assault.

The figure for heinous crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rioting and grievous hurt for Maharashtra stood at 1,500. Around 517 juveniles were booked for rape and gang rape, 39 were booked for unnatural sex. Number of juveniles charged for other offences on women stood at 704 for molestation, stalking, insulting modesty and assault on women.

Former Director General YP Singh said, "The reason behind why there is more crime committed by children is because there is a large slum population. Mumbai being glamour and economic capital of the country, many outsiders are coming to Mumbai and mainly Maharashtra."
