Mumbai rains day 2: Two deaths, 145 potholes and 24 tree-falls

Two deaths, 145 potholes, 24 tree-falls, waterlogging at 15 locations and two wall collapses summed up Sunday as monsoon showers continued intermittently for the second day. While the sky remained overcast throughout the day, a drop in temperature made the city a lot cooler.

Kamal Pandey lost his life after he fell from the roof of his house at Parseewadi in Chirag Nagar, Ghatkopar. Pandey lost his balance while spreading out a tarpaulin sheet on the rooftop and sustained severe head injuries. Locals took him to nearby Kohinoor Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

On-duty security staff ST Jadhav rushed the injured man to Rajawadi Hospital, but he could not be saved.

If the skies have opened up in the past two days, so have Mumbai's roads. According the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's pothole tracking portal, more than 145 craters were reported from different parts of the city on Sunday. Several spots on the Western and Eastern express highways and SV Road witnessed depressions. Citizens say the actual road scene could be worse than the official picture.

A huge tree came crashing down on a car near Churchgate, causing extensive damages to the vehicle. While there were three complaints of trees falling in the island city, the eastern and western suburbs reported six and 15 similar incidents respectively.

The civic body received complaints about waterlogging at more than 15 locations, including Padmabai Thakkar Road, near Kohinoor Square, Ashok Mill Compounds, Sant Rohidas Marg, Dharavi. In Eastern suburbs, water flooded the compound of a civic-run maternity home in Chembur Naka, R C Marg. Ghatkopar, Vikhroli and Bhandup saw rising water levels at many places.

In western suburbs, Marve and New Link roads in Malad, Yashwant Nagar in Goregaon, Chincholi Bunder, 10th Road Santa Cruz experienced waterlogging. While a wall collapsed in Chembur, another disintegrated in Bhandup. There were no casualties in these two incidents.
