The stampede at Prabhadevi station and partial collapse of Gokhale Bridge in Andheri has had an effect in this year's budget. The General Budget has made heavy provision of funds for construction of footover bridges, escalators and lifts at several stations on both Central and Western Railway lines.
On the Western Railway, the budget has been given money for new FOBs already constructed at Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Goregaon, Bandra, Vasai, Nallasopara and Virar stations. Funds have also been allotted for work at Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali and Borivali where wider footover bridges have been built. There are few stations where existing bridges have been replaced with new ones.
On the Central Railway, funds have been allotted for replacing old bridges with new FOBs. These include at Asangoan, Sewri, Mumbra, Masjid, Bhandup, Dadar, Diva and Kurla LTT. "The budget has also made provision for repaying the Indian Army with Rs 10 lakh for constructing bridges at Parel, Currey Road and Ambivali stations," said a CR official. New bridges that received funds will come up at Dadar, Mulund, Vikhroli, Titwala, Atgaon, Ulhasnagar, Kasara, Wadala, Govandi and Mankhurd.
For the first time, the Indian Railways have approved CCTVs inside coaches of local trains and intercity trains. This budget, a token of Rs 1000 has been made for providing CCTVs inside 10349 coaches, though the total cost is Rs 356 crore. This funding has been given to the Central Railway.
