Mumbai: Railway cops nab duo who snatched phone from commuter, killing him

The accused were identified as Satyam Singh and Shivam Singh, and both are residents of Nalasopara, informed the police.

Two siblings with a criminal past were arrested in a case in which they snatched a phone from a train commuter. In the said case, the commuter slipped from a local train compartment while chasing them and lost his life on Sunday.

The accused were identified as Satyam Singh and Shivam Singh, and both are residents of Nalasopara, informed the police. The main accused Shivam was released from jail a few days back for similar theft-related cases at Bandra railway station.

According to police officials, the incident occurred on Sunday evening when deceased Shaikh was travelling in Churchgate-bound train. When the train reached Charni road station Shaikh was standing near the gate of the compartment talking on the phone. Meanwhile, the accused Shivam jumped into the coach and snatched Shaikh's phone and jumped off the train.

Shaikh while trying to catch the accused jumped off the train, however, fell on the railway tracks and succumbed to his injuries. The General Railway Police(GRP) tried to take him to the nearby GT hospital where he was declared dead on admission.

Western Railway Deputy Commissioner of police Purshottam Karad said, "We have arrested accused Shivam and his brother Satyam who was assisting him in the crime. We took the help of CCTV footage and managed to identify the accused and arrested them from their residence at Nalasopara."

"We have seized one more stolen mobile phone from the accused and another phone whom the accused sold to a lady in Masjid Bunder," informed DCP Karad.
