Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said that the recruitment policy of the railways is transparent after scores of agitated students demanding jobs blocked trains on Central line in Mumbai.

Protestors blocked rail traffic between Matunga and Dadar stations, forcing railway to stop the suburban as well as express trains. Entire four lines are affected between Matunga and CSMT.

Speaking to media, Piyush Goyal said, "Recruitment in Railways is underway at a large scale. On directives of Supreme Court, Indian Railways has made a recruitment policy that is unbiased and transparent."

Goyal also said that the agitators have called off their protest and further discussions will be held.

A student who was part of the protest said that there has been no recruitment since last four years. "We are struggling from pillars to post. Over 10 students have committed suicide. We cannot let such things happen."

Students shouting slogans against railways held placard in their hands demanding one-time settlement from GM quota and said that they demand jobs from government.

The protestors who have passed the Railway act apprentice exam are demanding a removal of 20% upper limit in the hiring of candidates for Railway jobs.

They claim that until now everyone used to be included in Group D but now they have fixed at 20% quota which was mainly for the new lot.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that no rules have changed,20% seats are reserved for apprentices but they are demanding more.

"Lathi-charge was done after agitators started pelting stones, no one was injured," Fadnavis added.

Many stations on the CR - that ferries 42 lakh people daily - were overcrowded. People got down at Kurla and changed it on the Harbour line.

The Railways has set a target of training 30,000 apprentices at its 17 zonal and seven production units in 2018-19, as part of the government's Skill India initiative.

Apprentice training comprises basic and on-the-job training/practical training. Basic training is an essential component of apprenticeship for those who have not undergone any institutional training before taking up on-the-job and practical training.
