In a bid to enhance safety and boost connectivity on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has decided to construct two interchanges on the 94-km-long expressway. The interchanges have been proposed at Khalapur and at Kiwali, at Pune end. The interchanges will also connect the expressway with National Highway (NH) 48.

An MSRDC official said, "The interchange planned at Kiwale on the Pune end is basically to avoid black spots and to make travel for motorists more safer." Several black spots were identified on the expressway, where the engineering designs are being tweaked keeping safety in mind.

The MSRDC official added, "Another interchange at Khalapur has been planned to connect the alignment of the proposed missing link on the expressway between Khopoli bypass and Sinhagad Institute on the Pune end. The interchange will also connect the NH-48 that will cater to traffic inflow coming or going to Bangalore and further south."

The NH-48 measures around 2800-km between Delhi and Chennai, and passes through six states including Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

However, the cost and length of the proposed interchanges are not known yet. "We are yet to prepare the detailed project reports for both the interchanges," the MSRDC official added.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is the first of the deadliest expressway in the country. Although the number of accidents have increased in the recent past, the number of fatal accidents resulting in casualties have decreased, according to state highway police data. The year 2017 witnessed lowest deaths in the past five years, wherein there were 360 accidents in which 105 lost their lives.
