The Vile Parle police arrested a 24-year-old man on charge of rape after he refused to marry his girlfriend who is four-months pregnant. What is worse is that the woman’s parents are now unwilling to take her into their home.

Chembur resident Sunil Banarasilal Jaiswal, and the 21-year-old victim both worked in a private developer’s office at Vikhroli and had met about a year ago.

“Around six months back, Jaiswal got into physical relations with her after promising to marry her. The victim found out about her pregnancy recently and started pressuring Jaiswal to marry her. But he refused,” said police inspector B Tavare.

The woman then approached the Vile Parle police, after which the police lodged a case against Jaiswal and arrested him on charge of rape. He was produced in court and remanded in police custody till December 29.

Tavare added that the victim’s parents refused to let her stay at their home saying they will not be able to “show their face in society as their daughter got pregnant before marriage”.

“So, we informed a Kalina-based NGO and sent her to a women’s cell in Matunga.”

Psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty said, “Having sex in a romantic affair is a joint responsibility. One needs to know that it is an act of love and has to be done in socially accepted steps.”
