According to a recent order of the top brass of the city police, all staff, right from constabulary to senior inspectors, will be allowed to take leave on their birthdays and wedding anniversaries.

A move which is basically to ensure that personnel spend quality time with their families, these offs, said a senior officer, won't be cancelled under any circumstances. An official order to this effect will soon be issued by police commissioner Rakesh Maria.

"The department has decided to give lower rung policemen off on their birthdays and wedding anniversaries. These days have a lot of importance in the lives of people, including policemen, and they should be allowed to spend some time with their families," said joint commissioner of police, Economic Offences Wing, Dhananjay Kamlakar, who is also in-charge of the Mumbai police's administration wing.

It is a common perception in the constabulary that such orders are often retracted at the last moment citing bandobast or emergency duties, but, officers reiterate, that will not be the case this time. If any policemen are on leave on these days, their time off will be treated as leave with pay.

"If a policeman has taken off on his/her birthday or wedding anniversary, s/he won't be put on duty under any circumstances, be it festivals or emergencies. There is a tendency in the department to cancel offs and leaves of personnel on important events," said a senior officer.

The move has been welcomed by policemen. "At lower level in the force, policemen work under tremendous stress and pressure. Getting even our weekly off is a big issue. A major reason for stress is that we do not get ample time to look after our families. If we will be given off on such important days, I can say with conviction that the Mumbai police is taking initiative to treat its men better," said a constable, requesting anonymity.

"Of 149 policemen that died in 2014, over 25% succumbed to heart disease. This year till date, 13 policemen in service have died due to heart attack. Personnel, particularly in the lower rungs, often have duty for 48 hours. They are under stress as there are no weekly offs. If there is bandobast duty, they have to sacrifice their leaves and report to work. Hence, this move is much appreciated," said a senior inspector.
