They were crying out for help when they found themselves surrounded by water while standing on the rocky patches of Bandstand.

A huge crowd gathered around 4.30 pm after hearing the cries of the students. They did not notice the sea level rising. One of the witnesses informed the police control room.

The two speedboats — Panchganga and Bheema — of Mumbai police's Port Zone were patrolling when they received an emergency call.

Rashmi Karandikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police of Port Zone, said: "As soon as the patrol boats were informed about the emergency, they rushed to the spot and rescued the students."

"Our policemen entered the sea with floaters to pull the students to safety. The students were pulled out from the sea and were taken to a safe zone towards the shore," added Karandikar.

Pandit Thackeray, Senior Inspector from Bandra police station, said: "It is dangerous to enter the rocky patches of the sea. The students were caught unawares and they panicked after being surrounded by the sea water on all four sides. We have taken the statements of the rescued students and have let them off."
