The Mumbai police played a crucial role in negotiating with the Kisan Long March leadership to change their plan from Somaiya Ground in Sion to Azad Maidan. Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha (AIKS), which led the Kisan Long March from Nashik to Mumbai to gherao the Vidhan Bhavan, had earlier planned to march from Somaiya Ground to Vidhan Bhavan on Monday morning which could have led to major traffic jams.

According to sources, in a bid to avoid this, the Mumbai police used its intelligence and negotiating skills to act swiftly. As soon as the rally reached Mumbai, senior police officers contacted the leadership to discuss their routes and schedule. The police officers had joined the march from Mulund itself and had started convincing the leadership to stop the march towards the Vidhan Bhavan. However, when the farmers were reluctant to accept it, the officers asked them to either end the march at Somaiya Ground or leave for Azad Maidan during the night.

"We convinced them that there are HSC and SSC exams and the march would students appearing for them hence they should either end the march here or if they want to go to Azad Maidan then they should do so at night itself," said a police officer.

Once the organisers agreed, the government arranged 50 buses for the farmers to travel to Azad Maidan however the farmers denied the facility. The march was not only peaceful but orderly as well.

Though the protesting farmers, looked tired and stressed from their faces while they were marching in the midnight, the tiredness did not stop their feet from heading towards their destination, Azad Maidan in South Mumbai.

These thousands of farmers holding red flags, placards and wearing caps kept moving towards Azad Maidan in the midnight without even taking any rest and creating any kind of mess on the roads. The long march was well disciplined and except their demands did not make any kind of voice. "I have seen many protests in the past 30 years, however, have not seen this kind of discipline in any march," Water Conservation minister Girish Mahajan praised them while interacting them on the wee hours of Monday.

Mahajan too had joined the march in the midnight and walked from Dadar to Byculla with the march.

All of them had only one wish that their demands should be fulfilled by the government. Within a span of 4 hours, these thousands of farmers with the convoy of police and ambulance crossed a distance of 18 kilometers peacefully and reached Azad Maidan around 5 am without even creating any kind of mess or even without loitering on the roads.

"We can march day and night but the government should fulfill our demands what we are demanding is the basic need," said JP Gavit, an MLA, and organiser of the rally during the march.
