City police gave a pleasant surprise to senior citizens by celebrating Valentine's Day with them, thereby spreading a message that they care for the elderly in the city. The event was attended by 750 senior citizens from Dindoshi, Aarey Colony, Vanrai, Kurar, Samta Nagar, Dahisar, and Kasturba Marg areas.
The event 'Ek Shaam Buzurgon Ke Naam' (an evening with senior citizens) was organised by deputy commissioner of police, zone XII, Vinaykumar Rathod. The event that lasted for four hours, was held at Thakur College in Kandivali (E) on Thursday.
Speaking more about the event, DCP Rathod said, "We had decided that senior citizens from northern suburbs should be given a surprise on Valentine's Day. Some of the attendees, who stays in the city all alone, were visibly happy to socialise. We loved spending time with them."
The event also gave the cops a platform to create awareness among the elderly lot. "This event also gave us the opportunity to update our records on the senior citizens staying in our jurisdiction. We also gave them tips on crime prevention and a presentation was showed to them on precautions that senior citizens should take," said Rathod.
The police also distributed pamphlets of government schemes for senior citizens to those present at the event.
Well-known television personalities from the serial Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah had participated in the event. While senior citizens broke a leg at the event, an orchestra playing old melodies transported them to bygone days.
"We had made a list of senior citizens visiting the event and those whose were born in February. Thirteen such senior citizens who had their birthdays this month and had come for the event were given a surprise. We had arranged a cake for them and made them cut the cake together," said DCP Rathod.
"It was a heart-warming event. It was a wonderful gesture from the police department to have spent their time with us. Such initiatives will pull down all the barriers and fear to approach the police officers," said 80-year-old Mangal Bhanushali, one of the visitors at the event.
