Monday, October 6, will see people feasting on biryani, kebabs and other delectable dishes, for Bakr-Id is set to fall on that date this time. In the days leading up to the sixth day of October, there will be large vehicles like trucks laden with goats, sheep and other animals being taken for slaughter. With an aim of maintaining the law and order during the festival, the city cops have formed special teams which are keeping a tab on these vehicles.

The squads have been posted at every check naka, whose primary duty is to keep an eye on the number of trucks that enter the city ferrying the animals. "This time around, we are taking extra precautions to ensure that there is no law and order problem and hence, the squad has been formed," said Mumbai police spokesperson, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Dhananjay Kulkarni.

Each unit consists of one officer and five constables from local police stations. As per DCP Kulkarni, apart from checking every truck that enters the city, the team also verifies that the vehicles have the required permission and later, escort the trucks till the Deonar abettor.

"Once we are sure that all the permissions are in place, some policemen escort the truck till the Deonar abettor so that they don't go anywhere else in the city and cause a problematic situation," informed DCP Kulkarni.

Citing an example of a vehicle entering illegally into the city, DCP Kulkarni said, "Two days ago, a truck managed to reach South Mumbai and was stopped by an activist. Police immediately swung into action and registered a case against the driver."

Imploring the public, DCP Kulkarni further added, "We appeal to people not to take laws in their hands and if they have any complaint, to approach the committee that is headed by a senior IPS officer."
