Just a week ago, when city was busy in civic elections, B ward office had taken up long pending demolition of 13 storied building on Mohammed Ali Road and was reduced to ground zero. Additional Municipal Commissioner Pallavi Darade had ordered the Assistant Commissioner of B ward Uday Shirurkar to carry out the demolition. It demolition was completed in a week's time amidst strong resistance from the occupants of the building.

Assistant Commissioner Shirurkar said that the developer originally sought the repairs of ground plus four floor structure. While the permission was granted for repairs of four storey, he went on to construct the building upto 13 floors.

When the owner violated the rules, Additional Municipal Commissioner ordered B ward to demolish entire building. Ward office in a weeks time demolished the building even as the residents and locals objected strongly against it.

Shirurkar said that the ward office had acted swiftly and did not give any chance to the developer to approach High Court so that a stay order can be obtained. Demolition was planned by the ward office and was taken up with the help of local police resistance was expected.

"Women deliberately stayed behind in the building along with the children so that the police and BMC were forced to stop the action. But we went ahead with the demolition of upper floor every single day. We took help of women staff from the BMC and also women police to get them out of the building. After seven days of continuous work of demolition, the occupants decided to leave as they had no other alternative", said Pallavi Darade, Additional Municipal Commissioner.

Darade said that the buildings in the congested area are close to each other and we had to take extra care that the neighbouring buildings were not affected and no one is hurt. "We took up the work slowly but steadily. Though it took one week, we could accomplish the target", said Darade.

Incidentally, the building falls alongside the Central Railway lines. Railway authorities were informed about the same since the fear of debris falling on the track. Though the permissions were delayed from the Central Railway, BMC could finally get the approval for the demolition.
