The city's psychologists are constantly receiving cases of teenagers' addiction to online games like Ludo, Pokemon GO and PUBG. One of the city-based psychologists is counselling more than 10 teenagers for online gaming; these teens will soon be appearing for their board examinations.

Speaking about such game addicts, Dr Harish Shetty said that he has confiscated the mobile phones of around 10 to 15 teenagers. The phones are now in his office drawer. Dr Shetty took away their phones as their board examinations are approaching and the teenagers need to concentrate on studies.

Dr Shetty said, "The students have handed over their phones to me because they don't want to play. Over the weekend, they come and play on their phones for some time and then, hand them over to me.The teenagers, now, use a simple mobile phone for daily use. The challenges to handle such cases are too many as the addiction is worse than that of alcohol. Game addicts become impulsive because of the emotions involved. Rational thinking tends to cease. Therefore, support from parents is necessary."

While most of the students take counselling sessions, two had to be admitted in a rehabilitation centre. "One of the rehabilitated teenagers has been discharged. The other one, who will be appearing for his higher secondary examination, is still under treatment at the rehab."

Speaking about different cases, Dr Shetty added, "I have a few patients, who got hooked to online games while they were in class 9. They revealed a drastic change in their respective behaviours ever since. They would beat up their family members if their phones were taken away. In another case, one teenager would call his friends home to play online games."

Some of the people addicted to online gaming show changes in behaviour while dealing with their family members and relatives.

Dr Sagar Mundada, another city-based psychologist, said he tackles at least two new cases of online gaming addiction among teenagers every week. He added, "I am counselling a teenager who will be appearing for his higher secondary examination. His parents are worried about his addiction as his academic performance is getting impacted."
