With a view to motivating scout and guide teachers, the state education department has increased two spots in the annual state teachers’ award. According to a government resolution, scout and guide teachers play an important role as they are instrumental in inculcating good manners and values in the students at the school level. These two will be included under the already existing ‘special teachers’ category.

Each year, on January 26, the state announces the ‘Savitribai Phule ideal teacher’ award for 106 teachers and awards a cash prize of Rs 10,000 on September 5. This year, the government has announced a tablet computer for the awardees. Winners of the ideal scout and guide teachers award will also receive the same.

The state has approved an additional budget of Rs 37,000 for this. However, the current awardees are unhappy with the state’s implementation of the scheme, saying Maharashtra is the only state which has discontinued the salary increments.
