The number of injuries this Dahi Handi has reduced to one-third of last year's figure, but the same cannot be said about the noise levels. Awaaz Foundation measured decibel levels in several places across the city and found that they had gone up considerably as compared to last year. The highest decibel level recorded this year was 109.4dB in Dadar, whereas last year it was 105dB.

"The difference is not arithmetic. Even a difference of four decibels in practical terms means that the noise has almost doubled," said Sumaira Abdulali, convenor, Awaaz Foundation. The maximum permissible limit in residential zones during the day is 55dB. Some residents from Malad and Charkop in Kandivli contacted the police to complain about the high noise levels in the city.

Decibel levels recorded

  • Bandra: 91.2dB
  • Opposite Sena Bhavan: 109.4dB
  • MNS mandal near Dadar station: 108.4dB
  • Opposite Bandra police station: 103dB
