Sunil Deodhar, founder of My Home India, a nine-year-old NGO, that tackles issues of security, law and order, social-economical and emotional alienation faced by the people of the Northeast who live elsewhere in the country, in a conversation with dna said: “We have a helpline to provide speedy aid to people facing problems. The calls it receive are transferred to a member of our organisation, who then forwards them to the police station concerned.
The NGO has helped solve more than a hundred cases of violence and complaints involving people from the Northeast. My Home India operates from Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and Bangalore.
Deodhar added: “Everyday thousands of Northeasterners come to Mumbai to make a living or to study. I appeal to the state and the judiciary to take speedy action when cases involving people from the Northeast come up. The public should avoid stereotyping.”
The NGO has more than 450 odd people actively monitoring and catering to the 15 to 20 distress calls that it receives everyday. It provides medical assistance, information to the sick regarding the best facility available for treatments, its cost, availability of lodging/boarding facilities, etc. My Home India also aims to create social, cultural and educational awakening amongst tribal and backward class people.
The NGO has appealed to the rest of India to treat the people from the Northeast as Indians. Deodhar said it is a fact that outsiders faced racial problems in Imphal, Meghalaya, etc., but insisted that the key to national integration is racial harmony.
