A 26-year-old man had to undergo a facial reconstruction surgery after he met with a bike accident. Doctors say, while the helmet saved him from major brain injuries, the impact left his facial bones chipped into pieces.

The biker was on his way back from work, when he met with the accident in the last week of February. He was taken to a nearby hospital initially, before being shifted to SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim.

The biker had sustained severe maxillofacial trauma and his mid-face bones were completely shattered. According to a doctor, his upper jaw was hanging loose. He had also suffered slight loss of memory.

Speaking about his condition, Dr Samrat Tawde, Consultant, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, SL Raheja Hospital, said: "The patient would have died of extreme bleeding and suffocation if the pedestrians wouldn't have shifted him to a hospital. We operated on him immediately to stabilise his jaws and stop the bleeding. It was noted that the lower jaw was broken and the upper jaw and palate were broken into four pieces. His nose, along with the adjoining areas of his face, was also shattered.

To sustain the airway, surgeons decided to perform a Tracheostomy, which consists of an incision on the throat to directly open an airway. A tube was passed through his nose to ensure that. He had to undergo a submental intubation surgery, which requires insertion of a windpipe by cutting under the chin.

"The cheekbone served as the main stable point and we were able to re-arrange the bones. The face had caved-in near the nose, the upper jaw were rearranged outward, and plates were implanted across the upper jaw with elastic bands to hold them together. While the patient was discharged a week ago, he visits the hospital for follow-up and psychiatric analysis."
