A report prepared by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has revealed that chances of illegal hunting may arise during the construction of the 701 km-long Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway. This is because a lot of forest land is going to be diverted for the construction of the Expressway.

The construction of Rs 46,000 crore Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is expected to start by this year, for which the bidding process is currently ongoing. However, a report prepared by MSRDC on mitigation measures to protect the environment, reads, "Increase disturbance and chances of illegal hunting during construction period will be minimised by patrolling of forest department."

The report further, reads, "The contractor will take reasonable precaution to prevent his workmen or any other persons from removing and damaging any flora and fauna including fishing in any water body and hunting of any animal."

"If any wild animal is found near the construction site at any point of time, the contractor if required will take appropriate steps if required in consultation with the forest officials," the report adds.

For example, between Jalna and Aurangabad in Marathwada, 155-km of Expressway will pass and for which around 26.877 forest land will be diverted and around 399 trees in the forest land and around 21,627 trees and shrubs in non forest and private land will be affected. Arouund 23-km of agricultural land also will be diverted in this 155-km stretch for the construction of Expressway.

The state government is currently undertaking the land acquisition of around 10,000 hectares required for the project. Of the total land required for the Expressway between Nagpur and Bhiwandi, 84 per cent of the land is agricultural, 13 per cent is fallow land and 1.92 per cent is forest land.

The 701-km-long Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is touted to be one of the longest Expressway in south Asia and will have six lanes with an additional two service roads on each side. The entire Expressway is expected to bring down the travel time to 10 hours from the current 17-18 hours.
