There is a possibility that, in just over three years, an elevated road will be readied to decongest Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) by connecting LBS Road, Kurla with Vakola Junction, Santacruz on the Western Express Highway (WEH). This elevated link is being titled 'Santacruz Chembur Link Road Extension'.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has floated bids for the design and construction of the extended elevated road.

An MMRDA official said: "There will be two lanes headed for each direction, i.e. towards Kurla and towards Santacruz. The estimated price to erect the elevated road on the road median is Rs413.25 crore for close to 4km."

As per the latest design, motorists coming from the direction of Andheri will have to get on to the existing Vakola Flyover on WEH, where an arm will branch out towards SCLR, whereas those coming from Santacruz Railway Station East can take the entry ramp near the Grand Hyatt Hotel entrance to be able to head to Chembur as well as to Bandra Kurla Complex using the elevated road.

Once on the road, at Imam Ahmed Raza Chowk, a ramp will go straight and land outside Kapadia Nagar so that motorists can proceed to LBS Road or can head towards Lokmanya Tilak Terminus or Chembur. But at the Imam Ahmed Raza Junction, an arm of the elevated road will take a right turn to head towards the MTNL Junction at Bandra Kurla Complex. At the MTNL Junction, the elevated arm will once again take a right turn heading to the arterial road of the business district.

Meanwhile, those coming from LBS Road or Chembur will be able to take the entry ramp out from Kapadia Nagar and go straight to Santacruz. Those motorists coming from Bandra Kurla Complex will have to take the elevated route, which will start from near Café Gulshan. Once on the bridge, there will be two exit points — one will be near Grand Hyatt Hotel, while the other will go over the existing Vakola Flyover and get connected with the flyover so that motorists can proceed directly towards Andheri or Borivli.

"The tendering process will be done during the next few months. We expect the construction work to commence after the monsoon and the project to be ready in 36 months, i.e by mid-2019," the official added.
