Motorists are angry with the city's traffic police and Metro authorities as Metro construction work on the Western Express Highway and Link Road enters its last few months. The reason is that motorists have no prior information about exact locations and duration of night blockades at the above-mentioned places.

The Metro authorities block roads at night, on the north-bound lane of the WEH and Link Road to facilitate construction work. Motorists say that such blockades extend from a kilometre to two to three kilometre at times. As a result, traffic is diverted to parallel lanes but, prior intimation on daily blocks should have been thought of.

Motorists say that the problem results in hundreds of vehicles moving at a snail's pace. According to them, receiving information beforehand can help them plan their alternate routes accordingly and avoid traffic during late hours.

Ankit Arora, a Borivali resident said, "I ride back home quite late at night. There are regular blockades at several spots between Andheri and Dahisar but, we receive no information at all."

"If the authorities inform us about specific blocks, we can use diversions and ply via SV Road to avoid bottlenecks during late hours. I think the city police should make better use of their Twitter handle and inform motorists about such blocks and their respective durations."

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is carrying out a civil construction work on the Andheri East-Dahisar East Metro-7 on WEH and Dahisar-DN Nagar Metro-2A on the Link road since October 2016. Work on both of these Metro corridors is expected to be completed by mid-2019 and commercial operations should be in place by 2020.

Shaikh Parvez, a taxi driver, who frequently visits the western suburbs said, "Night blocks for construction of Metro corridors is not an issue at all but, the arrangement is not enough to manage traffic properly when vehicles are diverted from the north-bound lane to the south-bound lane. There are times when manpower is lacking. At times, there are only a few traffic wardens to inform about diversions."

On being contacted, an MMRDA official said, "We are carrying out night blocks for speedy construction. Work should be completed within the stipulated deadline. However, traffic management and diversions are conducted by our traffic wardens, and traffic updates are to be given by the traffic police."

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shashi Kumar Meena (Traffic, Suburbs) said, "We will definitely consider this as a suggestion, and after discussions over the same, we will do something on the lines of informing motorists about locations and durations of night blocks."
