Mumbai: More than 8,000 neonatal deaths in past 4 years

As per the data provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s public health department, more than 8,110 neonatal infants have died in the city in the past four years. The data was collected through a Right To Information (RTI) response from the public health department as well as three major civic-run hospitals — KEM Hospital, Nair Hospital and Sion Hospital.

According to the data provided by the public information officer from the public health department, around 7,849 neonatal infants (from birth to one month) have died from 2015 to 2017 in the city.

Further, from January 2018 till June 2018, around 264 neonatal deaths are registered in three of the major civic-run hospital besides other civic-run hospitals.

Majority of the reason for deaths in neonatal infants includes — congenital anomaly, premature birth, pneumonia, sepsis, and low birth weight to name a few, as per the data.

In KEM Hospital, Parel one of the major reason of the neonatal infant death is a congenital anomaly (164 deaths from 2015 till June 2018) followed by premature birth (85 deaths). Less number of infants have died due to infant respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) — 14 neonatal infants and pneumonia — 12 neonatal infants death.

While in BYL Nair Hospital, from 2015 to June 2018, one of the major reason of the neonatal infant death is due to premature birth (252 deaths) followed by infant respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) — 177 infants. Pneumonia caused 87 infants deaths and congenital anomaly caused 63 deaths.

Speaking about the steps taken to prevent the neonatal deaths, the head of neonatology from KEM Hospital in the RTI, said, "Strict infection control policies in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is taken care, appropriate resuscitation at birth is done as per guidelines." While in Sion Hospital, promotion of breastfeeding, ancillary support with human milk bank and promotion of kangaroo mother care is done to reduce the number of neonatal deaths.
