Your Monorail ride is going to cost you dear from next month. The Monorail service that has had a struggling past will be commencing the second phase between Wadala and Jacob Circle next month with a revised the cost of travel. The new price will apply to the first phase as well.

The current fare slab for first phase between Chembur and Wadala is between Rs 5 to 11 that will increase to Rs 10 to 20, and the fare slab for both the whole corridor will be Rs 10, 20, 30 and 40, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials said.

The second phase is expected to be made operational in first week of March that is awaited since almost five years now when the first phase started its operations in February 2014.

The frequency is expected to be around 20 minutes, and operational hours will remain the same, that is 6 am to 10 pm with daily around 132 trips being in service. The MMRDA now also expects to get revenue via non-fare box including that of getting advertisements with the commencement of second phase.

On Friday, two containers from Malaysia having around 112 different types of spare parts also reached the Wadala Monorail depot from Malaysia that will be fixed on the six nonfunctional trains. There are a total of ten Monorail trains of which one was damaged in fire of November 2017. Of the rest, three are currently functional for first phase, and the remaining are to be repaired for commencing operations on the second phase. "The parts will enable MMRDA refurbish four more Mono trains into the service of Mumbaikars. Once commissioned, entire route will attract many more commuters," Dilip Kawathkar, joint project director, MMRDA.

Further, this also means that the entire Monorail corridor will operate with seven trains. Majority of the spare parts that reached Mumbai include that of generators and electrical parts. The MMRDA also anticipates that the ridership from the current 15,000 to 17,000 passengers daily will go up to 1 lakh passengers using it daily. Meanwhile, global bids for purchasing more five Monorail train is expected to be out soon.
