Sunday effect: Contractors in dock
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will be invoking penalty provisions against contractors of Mumbai Monorail over the issue of a power cable burning on Sunday, which led to services being stopped temporarily and passengers being asked to alight. An internal inquiry has been commissioned and the report is likely to be finalised by next week. Depending upon the gravity of the problem, penalty will be decided.

Mishap recap
On Sunday evening, there was traction power failure at Fertiliser Township Traction Sub-Station. Monorail services for the rest of Sunday and early Monday morning had to be cancelled. On Sunday, 28 services were cancelled, and, on Monday morning, eight.

What MMRDA said
Reacting to dna's report, MMRDA commissioner UPS Madan tried to play down the incidents on monorail on Sunday and earlier — instances of doors opening between two stations, breakdown of machinery — by saying such problems happen everywhere in the world. "These are teething troubles, small incidents, and happen all over the world. It is nothing new with this particular monorail," he said. "We are trying to be as accurate as possible."
Meanwhile, MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kawathkar said, "MMRDA will be invoking the penalty provisions for non-maintenance of service standards and for the fault that occurred on Sunday. The extent of penalties is being finalised."

Safety lapse being ignored
However, penalty for power cable burning aside, the fact remains that a major safety lapse such as door sliding open mid-ride on the 8.93km Chembur-Wadala Depot corridor is being ignored, as the responsibility for the same has not been put on anyone and no action will be taken on it.
