The fight over whether or not to construct the metro rail car depot at Aarey Milk Colony is raging not just in court rooms, but on Twitter as well, with conservationists and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) officials getting into heated arguments.

On Saturday, the spar began when MMRC’s Executive Director (Planning) Ramana R made a statement on the micro-blogging site, “Aarey matter in NGT (National Green Tribunal) and tree cutting case in Hon. High Court will be decided on facts @MumbaiMetro3 @ashwinibhide”. This comment was accompanied with an image where IPS officer turned lawyer YP Singh was quoted, “The court order is based on legal framework and not on activists’ opinion. Judges take decision as per the legal provisions. The decision will be based on facts.”

Immediately, MMRC’s Managing Director Ashwini Bhide responded, “Truth always surfaces. One cannot suppress it for long.” From here on, the argument began, with Bhide also blaming the media for having reported the dispute between environmentalists and state officials. She added, “Media in search of sensationalism and some souls in that of identity take everyone for a ride by suppressing facts. But how long?”

One of the supporters from Aarey Conservation Group, Nitika Agarwal, responded to the officials stating “we are also hoping that all the files and papers regarding Metro Aarey surface #SaveAarey”

Even the Aarey Conservation Group, the umbrella body of green brigade, also gave it back to MMRC officials, commenting “Yes ma’am that’s right. Trust of govt greed for Aarey land has been surfacing this past week.”

Among the other comments were supporters stating that the fight to protect forests is for our kids. Moreover, “The courts are there to protect the citizens when the govt fails” as MMRDA flouts NGT orders.

This isn’t the first time such a volley of words has taken place over social media. Last year too, MMRC officials and the green brigade chose the micro-blogging site over arguments in a court room. Already, the petition whether there should be car depot for Colaba-Bandra-Seepz metro rail at Aarey Milk Colony or not is being heard at NGT. Secondly, another petition has been moved in the Bombay High Court over the trees that will have to make room to have metro line in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the Western Railways has approved transfer of land within Mumbai Central Railway Station complex to MMRC for a temporary duration so that a metro station can be constructed underground. A couple of months ago, Railways and MMRC had some differences on sharing the same plot.
