With passenger ridership of Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 corridor increasing every other day, the operator Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) has proposed to install platform screen doors (PSDs) at Andheri Metro station, which is said to be one of the most busiest Metro stations after Ghatkopar.

PSDs help in better crowd management and preventing suicides as the doors are in sync with Metro doors, and opens only after a Metro train stops at the platform and shuts subsequently. Also, such a facility is vital considering the ridership of Mumbai Metro has seen a steady increase with its ridership touching 4 lakh commuters on a single day.

The MMOPL that operates the Metro-1 corridor since its inception in 2014 has proposed this idea to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) that owns 26 per cent stake in Metro-1 corridor.

“Due to narrow width of Andheri down platform, which is the lowest amongst all platform of Metro-1 corridor, its passenger handling capacity is less than other platforms. There is thus a need for the provision of necessary additional infrastructure,” reads the communication sent to MMRDA Commissioner UPS Madan by MMOPL.

The communication further reads, “Half height PSDs are proposed for Andheri down platform. In India also many metros are procuring and deploying the same.”

PSDs are going to be installed in several Metro corridors that are under construction in Mumbai and are also installed in Delhi Metro.Further, MMOPL has proposed extension of Andheri down platform by installation of steel platforms by connecting the existing one.

However, MMRDA chief UPS Madan did not comment on whether MMRDA is taking the proposal positively. A senior MMRDA official said, “MMOPL has sent us the proposal, but we have not responded on the same yet.
We think MMRDA cannot bear the expense for the additional infrastructure, and MMOPL should bear the expense on its own.”

Meanwhile, a MMOPL spokesperson said, “We plan for future requirements in advance so as to be able to fulfil our commitment. We have sent a proposal to MMRDA.”
