A fortnight after the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro-3 rail line saw light at the end of its first tunnel, DNA goes underground to see what it takes to ensure that the city gets its first Metro corridor that isn't on ground level.

On September 24, Wainganga-1 tunnel boring machine completed its tunnelling drive which went on for around 1.26 km, between Marol and the city airport's terminal 2 at Santacruz.

The breakthrough was witnessed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Thousands including labourers, engineers and experts have been working round the clock to ensure tunnelling for the 33-km-long track is completed on time to make the rail operational by 2022.

Around 10 km of tunnelling has been done so far.

Metro-3's executing agency, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), says the feat wasn't without its share of challenges.
