A married man has been arrested on the charge of raping a minor, who found out she was pregnant last week when she visited Sion Hospital after taking ill.
The doctors learned that she was three months pregnant, following which the police was informed and the family apprised of the pregnancy.
The anguished family registered a case of rape, after learning that the minor's lover, who had at first claimed he was willing to marry her once she came of age, was already married with three children.
According to the teenager's family, who reside in Mahim West, she had met the accused, Mohammad Ahmed Ansari, 30, a resident of Nalasopara East, at Mahim railway station five months ago.
"Ansari struck a casual conversation with the girl and they exchanged phone numbers, Soon they became close friends," said a relative of the teenager.
Last month, when the victim experienced health complications, she visited the civic-run Sion Hospital, where she was told that she was three months pregnant.
The hospital authorities informed Mahim police, as the girl is a minor, and the cops got in touch with the family. A case was registered under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) on January 5.
"We were completely unaware of her relationship with Ansari. We were shocked when the police informed us that she had visited the hospital to terminate her pregnancy," said the girl's relative.The case has been transferred to Tulinj police station in Nalasopara.
A Mahim police officer said: "As per the victim, she was taken to different places in Nalasopara where Ansari had established physical contact with her. Accordingly we transferred the case to Tulinj police."
The relative said the family was devastated when they learned that the man, who told them he was ready to make the girl his wife, was married.
"There was a ray of hope that the situation might be salvaged when the man told us he wanted to marry her once she attained the age of an adult. We had even agreed to that," said the relative.
"But later, a woman approached us claiming that she was Ansari's wife and they had three children. Despite knowing he was married, Ansari ruined the girl's life."
Ansari was arrested by the Tulinj police on Tuesday.
"In such cases, we often come across instances of the accused person filming the act of private moments on mobile phones without the knowledge of the victims. We will interrogate Ansari to ascertain if he had done such a thing in the matter," said the officer from Tulinj police station.
