In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, the Mumbai police are leaving no stone unturned to prevent any untoward incident during the Mumbai Marathon to be held on January 19.
Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (south region), said that 22 anti-terrorism and anti-sabotage squads will be deployed along the marathon route to monitor the race.
“Though the number of police personnel patrolling the streets will be more or same as last year, we will deploy 22 anti-terrorism and anti-sabotage squads to ensure total safety,” Prakash said.
Three persons were killed and more than 264 injured in the Boston event held in April, 2013.
“We cannot rule out anything. The Boston Marathon was one of the most secure marathons, but look what happened,” said Prakash, adding that all volunteers will be registered this year.
“We have asked the organisers to give us the names and addresses of all the volunteers for the event. There will be plenty of policemen posted in plainclothes too,” he added.
