Two Nashik women who participated in the half marathon — overall women, secured the first and second place. The first three winners of 21 km overall women include — Sanjeevani Jadhav, (21), Monika Athare (25) and Kolkata-based Jhuma Khatun (28).

Sanjeevani Jadhav, MA psychology, participated for the first time in the Mumbai Marathon and emerged as a winner. Jadhav, said, “I have been running since I was five. While I have participated in other marathons in the past seven years, this is my first year in Mumbai Marathon. Every week I run 24 km. While I will soon be participating in the international run, I wanted to participate in Mumbai Marathon as a practice.” Jadhav completed her run in one hour 26 minutes.

Monika Athare, the first runner-up, says confidence is the most important aspect for a sportsperson, which allows him or her to focus on the goal. The LIC employee says that she has been in sports for the last 17 years and wishes to see herself as a winner in the world championship.

Speaking further about why winning marathons is important, Monika says, “The little money which we get as award, helps us to buy our basic sports accessories. The shoes which we wear cost around Rs 10,000, and we do not have that much money on an average to spend. Thus, such events help us financially to take care of our needs and also some goes towards fulfilling family’s needs.”

Sanjeevani and Monika were supported by their coach Vijendra Singh right from the start. “We start without fitness coaching right from 4 am and it’s a rigorous session for two hours daily. I want to target big now and I am confident of my achievement,” said Monika.

Singh, said, “Both the girls are focused and dedicated. It is not at all shocking that they both won. This is a practical experience since both will be participating in international  games.”
