Of the 44,407 people who participated in the Mumbai Marathon 2018 on Sunday, a total 2300 of them required medical assistance, which came up to 4.57 per cent. Most of them suffered from dehydration and muscle pulls.

The medical assistance providers for the Mumbai Marathon, Asian Heart Institute (AHI), says, this year there were no major medical assistance required to be given to people as this year’s marathon had filters for qualification for its participation.

However, of the 2300, two of them suffered major attacks, Pramod Singh Girase from Nandurbar and Suresh Kabra, suffered cardiac arrest and brain stroke. Both of them had participated in the half marathon run.  Girase and Kabra were shifted to Bombay Hospital for further medical assistance.

When asked what could have been the cause for the two attacks, Dr. Vijay D’silva, medical director of AHI, said that heart attack was caused primarily because the patient had arterial blockage, which caused the attack. “Girase collapsed near the end stretch. His heart had stopped. We revived him with artificial breathing, cardiac massage, defibrillation (electric shock to revive the heart). He regained consciousness and had normal vital parameters during his transfer to Bombay Hospital for further treatment. Kabra felt disoriented after finishing the race and collapsed. He has suffered from paralysis on one side of the body and is a likely case of brain stroke. This must have happened due to electrolyte imbalance in the body. After reviving, he was shifted to Bombay Hospital for further treatment,” added Dr D’silva.

Dr D’silva, while describing about the precautions needed to take to avoid such instances, said that participants need to go thorough medical check up in order to run the Marathon. “The most important point is that participants need prior practise. Just one-day prior preparation is not sufficient to run the marathon.”
