Mumbai: Man shoots down fisherman at Cuffe Parade, injures woman

A 38-year-old history sheeter allegedly shot dead a fisherman and injured a woman at Cuffe Parade on Sunday evening. The police are trying to trace the criminal and ascertain the motive that led to the incident.

According to the complainant Albert Swami, 42, a fisherman and resident of Geetanagar slums at Dr Homi Bhabha Road, Colaba, the incident had occurred near his residence between 4pm and 7pm.

"Accused Selvraj Veltambi Pillai, a driver, was known to the 46-year-old deceased Michael Swami, Albert's brother," said deputy commissioner of police, crime, Dhananjay Kulkarni.

He added that on Sunday, Pillai had left his home with a pistol. "When fifty-year-old Shobha Parsewad had asked Pillai where he was headed to, Pillai simply fired one-round aiming at her leg and injured her. Pillai then walked towards Michael's room and shot him on his left cheek and the latter died," said Kulkarni.

As per police, after the incident, Pillai fled from the spot. The police was then informed and Parsewad was taken to GT Hospital. "Pillai had no job. His pregnant wife, who used to work as a domestic help, also quit her job. We are investigating whether any financial difficulties led to the killing. We are making all efforts to trace Pillai," said senior police inspector Sharad Barde of Cuffe Parade police station.
