Mumbai man held for suicide by 22-year-old woman

The Nirmal Nagar police have arrested a 24-year-old man, his father and a younger brother on charges of abetting the suicide of his 22-year-old wife.

The man and his family members allegedly tortured the woman physically and mentally for dowry, the police said. The man's mother is also wanted in the case.

The woman, Afroz Qureshi, hanged herself to death on Friday at her house at Khatija Bai Dhoodhwala chawl, near Madina mosque, in Santacruz (East).

Her husband Gulshad Qureshi is a tailor, while his brother Mohamed Shahid, 23, is a salesman. Their father Mohamed Naushad Qureshi, 48, runs a small business, and mother Naseem Banu, 40, is a housewife.

The police said that according to a complaint lodged by Javed Ghanchi, 49, the girl's father, she was married a few months ago and was tortured to get the house that was on her name transferred to the husband's name. They also frequently made her to get money from her father.
