A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the abduction, rape and murder of a five-year-old girl. Mehendi Hasan was arrested in the wee hours of Thursday by Mahim police. He knew the girl and even helped her father look for her after she went missing.

Hasan lives on the footpath near Mahim Dargah with his wife and three daughters and was known to the little girl. Hasan did odd jobs in the area and allegedly kidnapped the girl on Tuesday night while she slept next to her father on the footpath. He took her to a deserted place, allegedly raped her and then strangled her with his bare hands. The whole crime was committed within five to seven minutes. Afterwards, he returned to the footpath and went to sleep, say police.

"The father lodged a complaint when he realised his daughter had gone missing," said Additional Commissioner of Police Ravindra Shisve. "We sent out a search team and the child's body was found in a shanty close-by in a semi-undressed state. The preliminary investigation highlighted that she was raped and then murdered. All possible suspects from the area were picked up for questioning."

Hasan was also taken into custody, and broke down and confessed when questioned. Other footpath dwellers knew of Hasan's perversion and told DNA that he had been lusting after her after he saw her undress frequently. "Every night, Hasan would buy illicit liquor, but on the night of the incident he was not inebriated," said an officer, "He was fully aware of his act, which was preplanned."

"We have registered a case under Section 363, 376 (a) & (b) and 302 of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of Protection Of Children From Sexual Offences Act. Hasan is still being questioned. It is our moral responsibility to ensure that sexually perverts get the strict punishment prescribed by law," added ACP Shisve.
