Mumbai: Man forged letterheads to get confirmed rail tickets

The accused, identified as Dev Pratap Chaturbhuj Sinh, would get the tickets confirmed by forging letterheads of Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assembly or chief secretaries, the police said.

A 29-year-old Lucknow native has been arrested by Mumbai Government Railway Police (GRP) for allegedly sending forged letterheads of a former state home secretary to divisional railway managers (DRMs) in Mumbai for get ting confirmed railway tickets in emergency quota.

The accused, identified as Dev Pratap Chaturbhuj Sinh, would get the tickets confirmed by forging letterheads of Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assembly or chief secretaries, the police said.

"We received a complaint from the former home secretary KP Bakshi, stating that his letterhead has been misused to get train tickets from Mumbai to Varanasi on April 24. With the echnical help we traced Sinh in Lucknow and placed him under arrest," said Samadhan Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, GRP, Central Railway.

According to the police, Sinh is the son of an Uttar Pradesh councillor's public relations officer. For the past two years, he had started the work of getting confirmed tickets in emergency quotas for travel agents and travellers.

The police said he would download the letterheads of high-ranking officers and legislators from the internet and forge them. He'd then fax the letters to DRMs get confirmation on tickets.

"He would charge Rs 2,000-4,000 for a ticket confirm ation from his clients, some of whom are agents. He has forged letterheads of 11 officers and legislators across the country. We have seized his mobile and computer from his house from where he operated," Pawarsaid.

Another police officer said, "It's a larger racket and Sinh, in the past two years, rake din lakhs of rupees doing this. We are grilling him to get details about how many tickets he has booked and in whose name."
