The LT Marg Police on Saturday arrested a 46-year-old businessman, who had allegedly kidnapped and had wrongfully confined a garment broker, after the latter failed to repay a loan.

The arrested businessman has been identified as Ashish Gandhi, a resident of Lokhandwala Complex in Kandivali (E).

According to the police, the complainant, who had been working as a garment broker since three years, had come in contact with Gandhi, who runs a garment shop at Kalbadevi, in 2017.

"The complainant said that in 2017, he had given garments worth Rs 96,000 to a Kerala-based client on a three per cent brokerage of the total deal. However, the Kerala-based company then shut down its operations, and in March 2017, the victim took Rs 50,000 from the client, of which he had given Rs 10,000 to Gandhi," said a police officer.

The victim then informed Gandhi that due to personal issues, he couldn't give him the entire money, but promised to do so shortly.

"On November 30, when the victim was at Kalbadevi, Gandhi spotted him and took him to his shop. He demanded his money back, before confining him for an entire day to within the shop's premises. He also took away his mobile phone. The victim alleged that Gandhi filmed his confession of having possession of Gandhi's money," the police officer added.

On Saturday morning, when Gandhi returned to his shop, the victim requested him to allow him a phone call to his family. The victim called his wife and told her in Kannada that he has been wrongfully confined by Gandhi. Upon his instructions, his wife first deposited Rs 10,000 in Gandhi's bank account and then approached the police. The police rescued the victim from Gandhi's premises. "We have arrested Gandhi on charges of kidnapping, wrongful confinement and extortion," the officer said.
