A 72-year-old resident of South Mumbai has been duped by an online fraudster of Rs 29 lakh under the pretext of offering high return in an insurance scheme. The Gamdevi police have registered a case against eight persons.

According to police, victim Rajendra Tiwary, a resident of Laburnum Road in Gamdevi, had received a call from a person who identified himself as an executive of a state-run insurance company and lurred him with an insurance scheme that gives high return on investment. Police said the unidentified accused told the victim he would get a return of double of what he invests. But, to avail this offer, he will have to transfer the amount to their bank account. Unsuspecting, the victim deposited Rs 3 lakh in the account provided.

Over the next six months, he received around seven different calls. All of the callers identified as employees of the company, and said his files have been transferred to them. They further lured him with yet another insurance scheme and duped him of a total amount of Rs 29 lakh.

"Even after giving the money, when the victim did not hear anything from the company, he tried to contact the concerned persons, but all of them were unavailable. Tiwary then realised that he has been duped and approached us. We have registered a case and are probing the matter further," said an officer from Gamdevi Police Station.
