The Delisle-Lower Parel rail-over-bridge (ROB) may be opened again, albeit temporarily, for vehicular movements till the tender processes of demolishing the dilapidated bridge and reconstruction of the new one is complete. However, the decision will be taken only after the bridge is inspected again on Thursday.

In a joint meeting of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Railways, Mumbai police, Traffic Police, and public representatives held at the civic headquarters on Wednesday, a proposal to what the possibilities of allowing light vehicular movement on the ROB was made. At present, the ROB is shut for all vehicular movement including for pedestrians.

After a joint visit of the BMC, Railways, police, and public representatives, it will be decided which part of the bridge is dangerous and which side of the road can be opened for vehicular movement. They will also verify what kind of vehicles can be allowed.

Meanwhile, the Railways are trying to get a second opinion on the condition of the bridge by conducting another structural audit. "The process of appointment of a contractor for demolishing the bridge will take time. During this period, the railways will look for a second opinion," said a senior civic official. However, the Railways will have the right to accept either the first or the second audit report.

During the meeting, the BMC said that as per section 17 and 18 of the Railways Act, 1989, the Railways will have to carry out all construction work in its jurisdiction. So, the railways will construct the bridge, while the BMC will pay for it. Meanwhile, the BMC will construct the approach road for the bridge.

It has also been decided that the Railways will speed up the process of appointing a contractor for demolishing the bridge.
