Mumbai Crime Branch on Tuesday claimed to have arrested Sajjad Mughal,who murdered city lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha, 25, in August 2012. The police sources claimed that Mughal was nabbed from Sonmarg in Jammu & Kashmir.

According to the police, Purkayastha was found dead in her Wadala flat. The police had arrested Mughal, who worked as a watchman of the building where Purkayastha stayed, for his involvement in the crime. Mughal had fled from the building after the crime came to light.

Mughal in his confession, had told the police that he had killed Pallavi as she fought him when he tried to force himself on her. He was sentenced to jail in 2014. In March 2016, Mughal had jumped parole after his request for extension was rejected by the jail authorities. Mughal, who was serving life imprisonment in Purkayastha murder case, had applied for the relief on the ground of his mother’s illness.
