A slab from an wall of the International Students' Hostel (ISH) building at Churchgate collapsed and fell to the ground near the entrance. The incident raised concerns about the safety of international students in the city.

After the incident, the hostel officials closed the front entrance to set up a net above the entrance in order to avoid any untoward accident in the future, thus making the students avail the back entrance to enter the hostel.

Many students from countries like Sweden, Africa and Afghanistan live in the hostel.

One of the international student said, "Some of the officials are talking about shifting us. They have received several complaints from students about the bad condition of the hostel."

Another student living in the same hostel, said, "The lift has also not been working since the last two to three months because of which students have to climb the stairs even till 11th floor. In addition, most of the students attend college in Goregaon which is too far from the hostel. We have informed the officials about this and they are trying to find another accommodation for us. They showed us a place in Goregaon, but it was like a hall where all 42-45 students have to shift, which is impossible. We want the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to either shift us to some college in South Mumbai or accommodate us in a college which has a hostel nearby."

Mrudul Nile, warden of the ISH, said, "The international students living in ISH are not MU students. They are studying in Patkar college at Goregaon who are suppose to help these students with accommodation. On March 8, Mumbai University officials in a meeting with ICCR regional director NK Malik and representative from Patkar college informed them that they need to shift students as the ISH hostel is not in a good shape. DEspite the students not studying in MU, the university officials are helping them to find alternative accommodation."

Shomit Salunkhe, MPhil last year student of Mumbai University (MU) have written a letter to warden of the hostel to help international students living in ISH and requested to do maintenance of the hostel which is in dilapidated condition. Salunkhe, said, "The international students cannot complaint, hence on their behave I have made complaint to help them."
