In June this year there was a major fire in an upscale high rise located in Prabhadevi, the building named Beaumonde had caught fire on its topmost floor, while there were no casualties, the building's internal fire system helped them a lot.
Babulal Varma, Managing Director of Omkar Developers who also resides at Beaumonde said, "The building has apt internal firefighting systems as per the requirements of Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB). The fire hydrant system, automatic sprinkler systems are always in working condition and immediately sprinkled water when the alarm went on."
Apart from this there also is a committee which monitors the same from time to time on the working of fire hydrant and automatic sprinkler systems in the towers. The society has a fire committee, which also ensures extra hose and water pipes are available as per the required norms of MFB to do the initial firefighting till MFB arrives on the spot in case of fire.
The fire committee also ensures the preparations as per national building code and other rules for firefighting in high rises using internal firefighting system. According to Varma, regular drills are conducted at Beaumonde to ensure preparedness of society members for a quick and faster evacuation in case of fire in the building. Also, the committee ensures regular check and maintenance of the fire systems for its quick functioning in case of fire.
"As a developer and being the society member I have taken initiative and lead myself and ensured that the firefighting systems are always maintained and kept in working conditions with regular checks by MFB officials. The same is followed in all our developments with world class firefighting systems being installed for tenant and building safety be it sale or for that matter rehab buildings. Omkar has never comprised on the safety standards to safe guard the precious lives of all our tenants."
Varma says if all these can be replicated in societies across the city major fires and lives lost due to fire can be averted.

- An independent fire committee to upkeep firefighting systems in working conditions in the towers
- Regular fire safety drills of all the members of the society
- Invite MFB brigade official to society to give briefing on fire safety and evacuation in case of fire at once a year
- Keep MFB number handy with each and evey society member and make it a automatic SOS from mobile phones of members
- Ensure the passage to safety is always kept unclogged of things not to block the evacuation in case of major fire
- The fire committee to ensure regular upkeep and check of firefighting instruments by qualified MFB officials
