A fortnight ago, Mumbai police lost one of its traffic constables, Vilas Shinde, who was assaulted with a wooden plank by a juvenile and his brother in Bandra jurisdiction while on duty. Ever since, reports of constables being manhandled, abused and attacked in the city have spurred up.

On Wednesday, the Sakinaka police registered an FIR against Sufiyan Khan (21) for allegedly assaulting an on-duty police constable. Senior police inspector with Sakinaka police, A Dharmadhikari said, “The incident took place at 9.30 am on Wednesday, when the constable, Chintaman Patil was discharging his duty along with another police official, while the accused who is a bread seller parked his cycle on the junction. The constable told him to park his cycle a little away from the spot. However, this angered the accused which resulted in a verbal spat. He held the constable by his collar. Not only that, the accused also pushed the constable, and punched him on his nose. Hence, the FIR was registered against him.”

In yet another incident on Wednesday evening, constable Hemant Anandrav Suryawanshi, was attacked by two brothers aged 27 and 37 each. Suryawanshi, who is with the Malabar Hill traffic division was posted at Opera House junction to AR Rangnekat Marg for patrolling and traffic clearance duty when the incident took place.

Spokesperson of Mumbai Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ashok Dudhe said, "At around 7:15 pm, a huge traffic jam stalled several cars at Opera House junction. Constable Suryawanshi checked the problem and found that due to vehicles taking U-turn at Dharam Palve signal the traffic was getting jammed. Hence, he decided to stop the vehicles from taking a U-turn. Soon after, an Ola taxi arrived and tried to take a U-turn, he stopped the cab also. This lead to an argument between the constable and cab driver. In the midst of all of this, the passenger intervened and abused the constable, this further lead to the passenger manhandling the constable. Besides this, the passenger called his brother and both together beat the constable, while one of them also bit him."
