Mumbai: Housing body says it works in sync with city admin

There are more than 14,283 cessed building in the city that the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) looks after. Of these, 12,029 buildings are in the A category, that is the most dangerous for habitation.

Considering the perils involved in maintaining these buildings, a 24-hour control room has been set up by MHADA at Tardeo. This is manned by engineers who, after receiving information about any dangerous building's collapse or part of it caving in, visit the site and take necessary action.

Related authorities like the BMC, fire brigade and, if need be, the NDRF are immediately informed when needed, MHADA officials said, claimign that they work in perfect sync with the BMC, especially when it comes to evacuation.

An official from MHADA said that the authority issues no-objection certificates for development of dangerous buildings on regular basis, and also notices for eviction.

Last month MHADA's Mumbai Repair and Reconstruction Board came out with a list of most dangerous buildings in the city, which named the seven most dangerous ones.

The first building on the list of the most dangerous is the Esplanade Mansion, located close to the sessions court. The other six buildings include building number 208-220 (Kazi Sayyed Street), building number 101-11 (Bara Imam Road), building number 30-32 (2nd Sutar Gulli), building number 69-81 (Khetwadi), building number 39 (Chopwatti sea face), building number 46-50 (Lucky Mansion, Claire Road).

Some 800 buildings have been repaired in the last one year that needed 10, 20 or up to 50 per cent repair.
