Mumbai: Grant Road heritage church to mark 150 years at own cost

Parishioners of a Grant Road-based church will soon mark 150 years of the Emmanuel Church — CNI. The church — one of the city’s heritage structures — was built in the year 1869 and is dedicated to the Marathi congregation. The church completed 150 years on January 10 and the cost of the celebrations will be borne by the parioshioners alone.

Located in the by lanes of south Mumbai’s Grant Road, a large part of the Maharashtrian community is the member of the church. The members also include nearly 50 families, 200 people from nearby areas. The parishioners at their own cost took over a large part of decorating the church, including the lighting.

According to the members, the church was first located in the Fort area and it later shifted to Grant Road. With its Gothic-style architecture, the church is listed as a grade 2 heritage structure.

Secretary of Christian Reform United People Association, Cyril Dara said, “We will be opening the doors of the church for a special mass to non-members, too, on Sunday. We will be having a special mass on Sunday. The church completed 150 years on Thursday, January 10.”

Comic actor Johnny Lever visited the church on Thursday, January 10 to participate in the celebrations and also wrote a personal testimony for Jesus Christ.

Secretary of the church’s committee, Deepak Jadhav said, “During the Sunday special mass, Bishop of Mumbai will be visiting the church for the mass and to conduct the service. We have also invited 30 priests from the Church of North India and a few community leaders for the mass.”

Jadhav added, “We will be having various programme throughout the year. We are yet to plan out the details of the programme.”
