The construction work to widen the Mumbai-Goa Highway is likely to resume from next month, as the bhoomipujan (groundbreaking ceremony) will be performed in February.

Minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday announced about his ministry's plans to complete the pending widening works of Mumbai-Goa Highway. The task to widen the road has been with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

During the widening project, that will be revived, the design of existing road will witness some modifications by way of alignment, curves and gradients on some sections of the highway.

The entire highway would be a cement concrete road and the estimated cost for four laning the 475-km highway (within Maharashtra) and another 122-km in Goa is around Rs4,000 crore and there is a possibility of revision. The project would be undertaken on the earlier Engineering Procurement and Construction financial model by way of four packages or tenders.

On Wednesday, Mumbai Port Trust commissioned its second liquid chemical berth at Pir Pau in Mahul near Chembur. The facility was inaugurated by Gadkari.

Talking to reporters at the event, Gadkari said: "With full commissioning of this berth, the cargo handling capacity of the Port will increase by 2.5 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) per annum. However, this will not add to the burden of city's road or rail infrastructure as discharge of cargo from the ship to the storage will be through pipelines."

The berth is designed to handle 55,000 Dead Weight Tonnes (DWT) vessels carrying liquid bulk chemicals, petroleum, oil and lubricant products, which can be upgraded to 65,000 DWT in the future. The total project cost is Rs127 crore.
