Mumbai-Goa cruise ferry to halt at coastal towns of Ratnagiri, Raigad

The Mumbai-Goa cruise ferry services that is set to start post-monsoon will also have its halt at many other coastal towns like Ratnagiri, Malvan, Vijaydurg and Raigad.

The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) is executing the project, and has already appointed an operator who will run the cruise services while Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) is currently preparing feasibility reports for having additional jetties for cruise ferries.

An MMB official said, "We are currently preparing feasibility reports for developing jetties for the cruise that will ply from Mumbai and are going further south. The jetty can be used by all the vessels, and are being constructed as part of coastal tourism plan which means it will also boost tourist activities in the Konkan region."

The MMB official added, "The jetties will take at least around one year to be constructed and be ready even if the construction is started post monsoon. By 2019, the jetties can be made ready.

Cruise ferry services between Mumbai and Goa is expected to boost tourism and will carry around 400 passengers at a time for sailing, however, the minimum fare for sailing on the cruise ferry is going to be around Rs 7,500.

However, the cruise ferry between Mumbai and Goa will not be available for four months in a year in monsoon during which tourists will have to opt for road, rail or air. The last such cruise ferry service between Mumbai and Goa was operational back in 1991, however, were shut after the vessels used for the same were sent to Sri Lanka.

The Mumbai port currently has the capacity to host 80 ships, but has a potential to host 700 ships and 32 lakh passengers once developed adequately. Meanwhile, in the last week of November, cruise ferry services between Mumbai and Kochi was started for which one has to pay around Rs 30,000 for four nights from Mumbai to Kochi.
