The election officials will no longer have to sweat it out. In a firsts, the election office of south Mumbai's 185 - Malabar Hill constituency has got central air-conditioning. It is located at Grant Medical College (GMC) Gymkhana in Marine Drive.

The entire election process for the upcoming legislative election, from nomination to the declaring results, would be held here.

This office, facing the Arabian Sea, is spread out over a three-acre plot. It has good connectivity by road and railways to aid in the commuting of the election duty staff. The Election Commission of India's mandatory rules regarding entry, parking, loudspeakers, etc can now be implemented in totality because of the office's strategic location and the adequate available space. Mumbai being a congested city, it is difficult to implement certain mandatory rules at some offices due to narrow roads and by-lanes.

Shaila A, collector and chief electoral officer, Mumbai district, says, "Next time we would identify similar office spaces for election purposes in other areas too. Election duty can be very tiresome with long working hours and time-bound work. A centrally air-conditioned office will boost the morale of the staff as well as improve productivity".

Padmakar R Rokade, electoral registration officer (ERO), Malabar Hill constituency, said, "The GMC being a government body, it is mandatory for them to rent out the premises for election purpose and at nominal charges."

"This place has all the essential set-up and is already equipped with CCTV cameras. We have already serviced all the CCTVs to avoid a breakdown at a crucial time. We will erect four watch towers to keep round-the-clock vigil till final results are declared," Rokade said.
