Come September 15,000 acres in Lower Parel will be dedicatedly used to encourage music learning in Mumbai. A new school that will train enthusiasts interested in learning how to play musical instruments like the guitar, sitar and tabla will offer basic and advanced courses.

"The music scene has mushroomed in India as of recently but yet there is no institute here that provides a technically firm grounding for career oriented musicians," says Ashutosh Phatak one of the two founders of  new school which will be called The True School of Music (TSM). The school has tied up with international music institutes. The faculty partner is The Manhattan School Of Music (MSM) and an intensive syllabus has been prepared by The Academy Of Contemporary Music, Guilford, England.

As of now the new school will offer two extremely flexible courses: The foundation course and one for professionals.

The former is for absolute beginners or those who are looking for just a taste of a disciplined course in music. In it 5 Western instruments: Guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals and 5 Indian instruments: sitar, tabla, harmonium, flute and vocals are the options that can be explored. The programme which consists of four lessons, an hour each over a period of one month costs Rs.5000.

The latter course is a much more intensive one recommended to individuals who are planning to commit to music on a professional level or otherwise. It consists of Certificate courses (vetted by MSM) in guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vocals, music production, DJ and sound engineering. Each of these advanced disciplines are broken into modules - an 11 week course consisting of 33 lessons of an hour each. One can do 2-4 modules at a time, 8-12 modules are required to acquire a certificate  and each module costs Rs.80,000.

TSM will provide the musical instruments, help you form a band (with fellow students of the same grade guided by a teacher) along with full-time access to its music library, movie and concert screenings, workshops and lectures by professional musicians.

Musicians have welcomed the school. "In India there is a lot of quantity in terms of music but far less quality. The latter will be possible through a focus which education will provide," says Ranji Barot, composer and drummer.

TSM also prepares you for the Trinity College Of London examinations too.

Some of the promising infrastructure includes individual customised workstations for DJs and Music Production students. Small individual practice rooms for one-on-one sessions with instructors. An auditorium dedicated to students and faculty for performances and a state-of-the-art recording studios.

TSM is open to kids fresh out of college who are serious about making a career in music, beginners of all ages wanting to systematically learn an instrument and professionals already in the industry.

"Our aim is not only to produce professional musicians, because not every student can become one or want to become one for that matter, but by attending TSM he or she will understand the passion involved in creating music. Thus we intend to generate a music sensitive audience as well,"  says Justin DiCioccio, associate Dean at MSM.

TSM will also provide integrated internships to its students with its various tie ups with studios, ad agencies and clubs. So that the students not only know the realities of the Indian music industry but also have enough experience to get commissioned.
