A five-year-old boy died after he got stuck between an elevator and the wall in Vasai on Saturday morning.

The deceased child has been identified as Ansh Gond, a kindergarten student, and a resident of Dias Residency Park in Vasai's Sativali area.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 11 am on Saturday morning.

"After playing in the building compound with his friends, Ansh and two other boys got into the elevator to go back home. The two other boys got into the lift, but when Ansh was about to do so, his leg got stuck in the gap between the lift's sliding door and the outside door. The gap is wide enough, and it's possible that a child's leg can get stuck in this," said senior police inspector Prakash Birajdar of the Valiv police.

"We suspect that while the two children were inside the lift, they pressed the first floor button, and the lift started moving, even though Ansh was stuck. He was dragged up and the lift then got jammed. When the other boys started shouting, residents were alerted. The watchman managed to bring down the lift to the ground floor by breaking its lock. As of now, there is no clarity on what exactly transpired. We haven't yet taken the statement of the two children who witnessed the incident since they are still under shock. We have called the lift technician to understand what may have led to the incident," Birajdar added.

Ansh was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. A case of accident has been registered at the Valiv police station.
