A group of students have come up with a unique solution to save the water which goes to waste while flushing the toilet.

'Flexi flush', a prototype created by Team Livewires — Dhruva Iyer, Rohan Shenoy, Sidak Arora, Chaitanya Raghavan, Shaommik Kelkar and Dhruv Jain — students of Class VI to VIII in various city schools is set to be the country's official entry to the global event, 'First Lego League' competition set to take place in Estonia in June 2018.

With the theme for this year being 'Hydrodynamics', participants have come up with innovative solutions to save water.

With the tagline 'Every flush saves', students hope to generate awareness among the people to help save water by using small yet effective techniques. The prototype consists of sensors that will estimate the amount of waste disposed in a commode and flush only proportionate amount of water. The flush can be retrofitted easily on existing commodes in residency toilets.

The model saves around 6 litres of water for every flush which usually takes up 10 litres of water. For a family of 4 , it is almost 144 litres saved per household. "Flushing takes up a large number of water at the household level and our aim is to save water that is wasted in the process. The sensors, if fitted in the commode, would dispense just the correct amount of water, thus, avoiding wastage" said Dhruva Iyer.

Apart from the prototype, the students are also working on creating simple solutions to save water by visiting housing societies. "We visited a few housing societies in Goregaon and Andheri. Many households that use open flushes were taught how to reduce the water usage by putting a few bottles in the tank so that the flush does not fill completely," said Rohan Shenoy.
